Joan Beaver is known throughout Michigan and Tennessee as an artist specializing in silkscreen, drawing, and stained glass. Her work also includes fine art, graphics, prints, and her soft-sculpture “Peculiar People” Dolls.
Above is a photo of Joan with “Mermaid”, and below is “Sally” who “sells seashells by the seashore”. Joan has made many of these soft-sculpture dolls, each one-of-a-kind, and whose personality develops as it is worked on. As she works on a doll, Joan says that it becomes a small new friend and it even tells her what she/he wants to wear. Ben Franklin, Tall Woman, Cleopatra, and Father Christmas are just a few others that Joan has created. She does commissioned works, so if you have a desire for a certain character doll, please call Joan Beaver.
Joan’s awards are many. Here are just a few. In 1973 Joan was named Michigan’s Outstanding Art Teacher. She has won two Project Teach Awards and several Graphic Awards. Some of her work is on display in Michigan at the K-Mart Headquarters, the Detroit Edison Company, MESSA Insurance Co, and the Michigan Education Association.
In 1993 one of Joan’s “Peculiar People” dolls was chosen as the angel for the White House Christmas Tree. In 1998, Joan was one of seven Tennessee artists asked to make a snowman for the White House Christmas Tree.
Joan searches stores to buy antique-looking fabrics and trim that help to define the era each doll represents. Each doll in one-of-a-kind that will be a special addition to your doll collection. Joan’s dolls have been featured on the Home & Garden television show several times.
Joan hasalso become well-known in Tennessee for her black and white drawing of old buildings in the eastern Tennessee area.
